A multi-frequency identification study of the SMC X-ray binary AX J0049-732

چکیده
We present a high-resolution multi-frequency identification study of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) region around the newly discovered X-ray pulsar AX J0049-732. ROSAT PSPC images show three X-ray sources near the ASCA source position. We combine X-ray, radio-continuum and optical data to identify these sources. RX J0049.2-7311 and RX J0049.5-7310 did not show long-term time variability nor pulsations during the ROSAT observations and both are not detected in the radio. We identify RX J0049.5-7310 with an emission line star in the catalogue of Meyssonier & Azzopardi (1993). This catalogue contains several known Be/X-ray binaries strongly suggesting the ROSAT source as new Be/Xray binary. RX J0049.5-7310 is therefore very likely the counterpart of the ASCA X-ray pulsar AX J0049-732. The third source RX J0049.1-7314 is associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) DEM S49 (B0047-735).

Discovery of a 9-s X-Ray Pulsar, AX J0049−732, in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We report on an ASCA discovery of a new X-ray pulsar, AX J0049−732, in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The pulse shape is sinusoidal with a barycentric period of 9.1320 ± 0.0004 s. The X-ray spectrum was fitted by an absorbed power-law model with a photon index of 0.6 −0.7 and a column density of 1.3 −1.3 × 10 22 cm. An unabsorbed flux at 0.7–10.0 keV was estimated to be 8× 10 erg cm s corres...
متن کاملX - ray observations of Be / X - ray binaries in the SMC ⋆
Fifteen Be/X-ray binaries and candidates in the SMC were observed serendipitously with the EPIC instruments of XMM-Newton during two observations of SNR 0047-73.5 and SNR 0103-72.6 in October 2000. A total of twelve of those sources are detected. For eleven of them an accurate position and in part detection of X-ray pulsations support the proposed identification as Be/X-ray binaries. In one cas...
متن کاملA multi-frequency study of the SMC region around AX J0105-722
We present a high-resolution multi-frequency study of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) region around the X-ray pulsar AX J0105-722. From ROSAT PSPC images we resolve this source into several X-ray sources. We combine X-ray, radio-continuum and optical data to identify the sources: for RX J0105.1-7211 we propose an emission line star from the catalogue of Meyssonier & Azzopardi (1993) in the X-r...
متن کاملDiscovery of an X - Ray Pulsar in the SMC : AX J 0058 − 7203
We report on the discovery and analysis of an X-ray pulsar, AX J0058−7203, in the Small Magellanic Cloud. This pulsar exhibits coherent pulsations at P = 280.3 s with a double-peak structure. The X-ray spectrum is well fitted with a simple power-law model of photon index Γ ∼ 0.7. No significant change of the pulsation period over the observation was found. A comparison with ROSAT observations i...
متن کاملDiscovery of 172-s Pulsations from a Be/X-ray Binary Candidate AX J0051.6−7311 in the SMC with ASCA
The results from three ASCA observations of AX J0051.6−7311 = RX J0051.9−7311 are reported. Coherent pulsations with a barycentric period of 172.40± 0.03 s were discovered in the third observation, with an exceptionally long exposure time of ∼ 177 ks. The X-ray spectrum was found to remain unchanged through these observations, with a photon index of ∼ 0.9. Energy-resolved pulse profiles in the ...
